In the midst of God’s creation, Keweenaw Base Camp builds up individuals and groups through intentional Christ-centered service opportunities, wilderness excursions, and extraordinary challenges that inspire faith, courage, and a faithful life of service to God and others.
The inspiration for the Keweenaw Base Camp came in the spring of 2011 when Carl and Michelle Treankler, a loyal friends and supporters of Camp Luther, offered the use of their newly purchased property near Houghton, MI.
The unique 220 acre parcel located six miles west of Houghton, MI was at one time a farm and more recently a goose hunting camp. When purchased, the property included a small lake, a pond, a home, cabin, and old hunting lodge.
The concept of a base camp means it will be a launching point for off-site activities and the U.P. of Michigan is filled with incredible activities! While plans aren't yet finalized, guests at Keweenaw Base Camp are able to experience backpacking, sea-kayaking on Lake Superior, mountain biking, mine exploration and much more. The program will target high-school age students initially. Campers may attend specific camps that will be offered or attend as part of a group from their congregation or organization. All programs seek to "build up" in the faith while providing opportunities for personal growth, challenges, community building, and adventure.
The Keweenaw Base Camp is managed by a Camp Luther program director who also serves as along with the assistance of college-age summer staff who lead camps and off-site excursions. The program director works closely with the Camp Luther staff in the year-round management of the ministry including promotion, program development and staffing.
We thank you for your prayers as this exciting ministry opportunity moves forward. If you have any questions, please contact Woody, Executive Director, at Camp Luther.
